From Concept to Component: Inside WireTech's Custom Fabrication Process
Every wire form starts as an idea. A new product line that needs a custom bracket. A redesigned piece of office furniture that calls for a precision frame. A replacement component for a piece of equipment that has to match exact specs. Getting from that initial concept to a finished, production-ready component is where WireTech Fabricators has built its reputation since 1963.
For customers, the process can feel like a black box. What happens between sending over a print and receiving a pallet of finished parts? Here is a look at how a project actually moves through our shop in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
Step 1: Understanding the Project
Before a single wire is bent, we need to understand what you are building. Every project starts with a conversation about the part itself (dimensions, tolerances, material, finish) and the bigger picture (annual volumes, target pricing, delivery windows, end-use environment).
Customers can kick this off in a few different ways. Many start with our online project survey, which captures the features your part needs (bends, chamfers, welds, threads, coins, drilled holes, finishes) along with diameter, monthly and annual volumes, and any prints or CAD files you want to share. Others call us directly at (920) 743-7201 to talk through the project with a real person. Either way, the goal is the same: figure out quickly whether WireTech is the right fit, and if so, what the smartest path forward looks like.
Step 2: Engineering and Design Review
Once we have your specs, our engineering team takes a closer look. This is the stage where we catch the things that are easy to miss on paper, like a tight bend radius that would stress the material, a hole placement that complicates welding, or a tolerance that drives cost without adding function.
Our team has decades of experience designing wire forms for industries like lawn and garden, office furniture, food service, automotive, and appliances. That experience matters because the same part geometry can be made several different ways, and the right choice depends on volume, end use, and how the part fits into your larger assembly. We will often suggest small design adjustments that preserve function while reducing cost, scrap, or lead time.
Step 3: Quoting and Planning
After the design review, we put together a quote that reflects the real cost of producing your part at the volumes you need. We also map out the production plan: which machines will run the job, what tooling needs to be set up, and how the part will move through the shop from raw wire to finished component.
For ongoing programs, this is also where we look at scheduling, inventory strategy, and how to keep your line supplied without tying up cash in excess stock.
Step 4: Forming the Part
This is where the part comes to life. Depending on the geometry, your component might pass through several of our core capabilities:
Bending shapes the wire into its primary form using CNC and pneumatic equipment for tight repeatability across thousands of parts. Chamfering cleans up cut ends for safety, fit, and finish. Press forming and cold forming handle features that need to be stamped or shaped under high pressure. Drilling adds precise holes where they are needed. Threading creates threaded ends for assemblies that bolt together. Robotic welding joins multiple pieces into a single rigid component with consistent, high-quality welds. And large frame work handles oversized parts that smaller shops cannot accommodate.
Most parts touch several of these processes in sequence. The advantage of doing it all under one roof is simple: fewer handoffs, tighter quality control, and faster turnaround.
Step 5: Finishing
A bare steel wire form is rarely the final product. Finishing protects the part, gives it the right look, and prepares it for whatever environment it is heading into. We coordinate finishing options including powder coating, plating, painting, and e-coat, working with trusted partners (including Professional Plating, a long-time WireTech partner) to match the spec your customers expect.
Step 6: Quality Control and Shipping
Every part is checked against your print before it leaves the building. As an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 Green Tier certified manufacturer, we have the documentation, processes, and traceability in place to support customers with strict quality requirements. Once parts pass inspection, they are packaged to your specs and shipped on the schedule we agreed to at the planning stage.
